A doctor was slain this past Sunday while attempting to assist a driver, and his practice in Eastern Carolina is in mourning.

On its website on Monday, Physicians East confirmed Dr. Roger McMurray’s passing.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Roger J. McMurray. He passed away on December 17, 2023. We send his family our deepest sympathies during this difficult time,” the website stated.

WRAL reported Sunday that McMurray, 45, of Greenville, and Gregory Harman, 53, of Raleigh, had pulled over on I-87 near Raleigh to rescue the driver of a black SUV that had gone into a ditch.

According to officials, 46-year-old Erik Rivas struck McMurray and Harman after losing control of his car.

According to WRAL, Rivas is accused with two misdemeanor counts of exceeding a safe speed and causing death by automobile.

In his bio, McMurray states that he graduated from ECU’s Brody School of Medicine and practiced family medicine. Prior to joining Physicians East in 2015, McMurray worked as a physician in the United States Air Force for four years.

According to Physicians East, McMurray’s patients will receive calls from their office in the upcoming weeks to assist with rescheduling their visits.
