At present, Hawkeye actor Hailee Steinfeld is leading one of the weirdest shows to have ever premiered on a streaming service. Dickinson is a loose interpretation of the life of 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson, and features one of the greatest television romances we've seen in a while!
Emily And Sue's Relationship Is Imperative To The Series
Hailee Steinfeld recently appeared on Access Hollywood and discussed the romance between Emily Dickinson and her best friend Sue Gilbert (Ella Hunt), before and after she becomes Emily's sister-in-law.
"This relationship to me, is one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever read," shared Hailee.
"I feel so fortunate we get to play through it, and have it be such a huge part of our show."
The actor explained how Dickinson as a show, is about not confining people in a box and labelling them for their actions or behaviors. It was about being seen, and being understood.
"Emily struggles her whole life to feel understood and seen by those in her very own house," she shared. Dickinson follows the life of the poet against the backdrop of her home in 1850s Amherst, where female writers were frowned upon and not accepted for who they were.
Comparing Emily's relationship with Sue, Hailee says: "When she’s with Sue, they have this deep, deep love and understanding for each other. It is so beautiful, and gets to be very complicated when Sue becomes her sister-in-law..."
"The love that they have for each other never, never diminishes." the actor revealed.
Wiz Khalifa Is A Huge Fan Of The Show!
Dickinson uses information about the poet that already exists, but takes creative liberty to elaborate most of its eccentric storyline. Emily Dickinson's poetry is a driving force of the series and as Hailee says, the result is "a very wild, exciting period comedy that has a lot to offer."
Sharing one of her favourite parts about the series, Hailee says was the scene with Wiz Khalifa! His character is the personification of death, a central theme present in most of the poet's work.
The actor shared her excitement about learning that Wiz Khalifa was a fan of the show.
"[He] wanted to to come back and do some more, so you see a little bit more of death in season 2...in a new and different kind of way than season 1 with another guest in the carriage," she teased the new season.
